Florida (USA)

It was not until the 16th century AD that the Spanish, Florida's first European invaders, were able to establish a permanent settlement in Florida at St Augustine - about 200 km (124 mi) north of Cape Canaveral. However, it was not until after the 2nd World War that the growth in air conditioning brought development on a huge scale to the Sunshine State. The flip side of development, of course, is environmental destruction.
