In 1992 I interviewed these Kazakh gentlemen for an ethnography project on horse husbandry. The interview took place at Botai Aul (village) in northern Kazakhstan. On the left is (EZZ) the headmaster of a nearby village school.

On the right is his relation (MKK), a retired headmaster, who was the main informant for the interview. In his youth he worked as a horse herder. I was particularly interested in talking to him because he was old enough to have memories of pre-Soviet horse herding in Kazakhstan.
