Horses at West White Poplar Gully (Xinjiang)

Two riding horses at West White Poplar Gully (Southern Pastures). The horse on the left is nuzzling his companion. Horses are enormously sociable and one of the few mammals that develop close, long-lasting relationships with unrelated individuals. The Southern Pastures are the summer grazing grounds of Kazakh herds. The herdsmen rent ponies to tourists, who bring much needed funds to the herders' household economy.
